Planetarium Show: Arcs to Auroras
Saturday, September 21, 2024 (11:00 AM - 12:00 PM) (EDT)
Description
We’ve all been captivated by the dancing northern lights we call auroras. Join us as we learn how Earth’s magnetic field creates auroras and how this magnetic field protects our planet from cosmic radiation and harmful charged particles from the Sun. Discover why auroras seem to dance across the sky in rays, folds and curtains of green, red, pink, violet, and white. Learn the history and some of the legends handed down by our ancestors as they attempted to make sense of the ghostly display of lights in the sky. See how scientists use the colors of the aurora to understand the energy of the particles that create it and their quest to better understand the magnetic connection between the Earh and the Sun.
A “Tonight’s Sky” program showing seasonal constellations and planets currently in the night sky will follow the show.
Registration is required. Space is limited.
